TRANSITIONING TO A BIG KID BED — “COCO VILLAGE”

Your little Baby is no longer a baby? The crib is getting smaller and smaller every day and will soon become the new favorite escape game on the block… The transition to a big kid bed is a big step for both parents and children. How to get through this stage without going back to the sleep deprivation of the newborn stage? This is one of the most common questions that many parents ask themselves and that the Coco Village team gets. Here are a few simple tips the Coco Village family have learnt and is trying to pass on to other parents looking for help. Remember there’s also a community of parents who share their thoughts on the Coco Village Comments section.

#1 — DON’T RUSH IT…NO PRESSURE!

As with all milestones of a child’s development, the rule is that there are no rules! Some children will be ready before they even turn 2, while others will peacefully wait until they are 3 or 4 years old (if not older!). In any case, everything is perfectly NORMAL! We highly suggest you have a look on the Coco Village Reviews and the Coco Village Comments to hear about other parents’ stories about their transition. The common factor in most unsuccessful experiences is the stress that parents have put on themselves to meet imaginary deadlines dictated by what other people opinions or experiences.

Children’s growth depends on an infinite number of factors such as their background, experiences, personality (as well as the personality of their parents), or simply by their personal history. Never forget that every child is unique, learning at his or her own pace.

Parents need to trust themselves and their child to let them know when they are ready to take this important step.

#2 — TALK ABOUT IT!

Fistly, it’s important to discover parents’ favorites on the Coco Village Reviews page.

Most children who are ready to make this transition already have excellent comprehension skills (even though they can’t always express their understanding). Parents can therefore gradually start asking questions about whether the child would like his or her own bed. It’s important for them to understand that this change will come with a responsibility to stay quiet in bed at bedtime. Communicating your expectations will allow your child to evaluate whether or not he/she feels capable of doing so and will reward him/her with the trust you give him/her by considering this option. It is up to you to judge if these conversations are relevant to his/her age and maturity.
